However, the restrained and solemn appearance of the Puritan village belied fundamental economic, political, and interpersonal difficulties, which wrought fear, mistrust, and uncertainty throughout the community. This climate gave rise to the witch-hunt that followed. After being regaled with magical tales of the West Indies by a Barbados-born slave named Tituba, two young Puritan girls began exhibiting peculiar symptoms, ranging from catatonic states to bodily contortions. Outcome: Students will complete the read and response sheet, detailing what happened in their own words and looking deeper at implicit meaning behind the text.

In This Article:
I will be looking for participation in the reading or active listening for those students not assigned a character. I can also informally assess students on how complete, detailed, and accurate their read and respond sheets are. The read and respond sheets will be useful for the students when they begin crafting an essay on "The Crucible," which will serve as the formal summative assessment for this text. I don't plan on needing to make many, if any, modifications for this lesson because I will be guiding the class for the entire block and the whole of the lesson is basically reading together as a class.
