David Stafford. Kathleen is going through a contentious divorce and is working as phone sex operator during her nights when she is not teaching by days. Now I weirdly found this charming. Considering our environment today, someone calling up someone who is willing to just talk about their sexual fantasies seems pretty PG right now. Unfortunately, a hacker who has somehow it is never explained hacked into the phone sex company's phone and computer listens in whenever Kathleen takes a call. Kathleen has become the perfect woman to him, and he wants a relationship with her.

Yeah relationship in this case equals rape. Eventually Twisted Don Juan shows up and rapes and murders Kathleen. We got to know a little bit about Ed in book 1. I found him endearing and weird in that book, and off-putting as anything in this book. No worries, Grace irritated the life out of me too. Ed pretty much falls instantly in love with Grace as soon as he sees her. When he finds out she is his favorite mystery author he is pretty much in heaven. When Grace's sister is found raped and murdered by an unknown assailant, Ed decides no matter what he is going to find the killer.

These two as romance leads really doesn't work. I don't know if it was Ed's insta-love that put me off, or the fact that Grace takes a phone call while at Ed's and talks to his mom off screen about everyone in his family. It was weird and dancing towards creepy. Also, I am five years old, but Ed's description of a big tall mountain man, with a big red bushy beard did not appeal to me at all. I just kept thinking every-time Grace kissed him she probably got a mouthful of hair.

I never got the feeling that Grace was in love with Ed. He was there for her at a terrible time in her life. But his insta-love thing would have had most women running the other way. Secondary character development in this one is really lacking. Having Ed's family off-screen was a big miss. Roberts should have included them. Or heck have Ed call them back after the weird personal phone call his mother had with Grace. Grace's parents come into town to bury one daughter and just disappear.

It was an odd choice. Most families, or at least mine would have been calling me day and night asking me to check the locks on the doors and windows. The serial rapist was lame as anything. I also hated Tess being involved with this and her maybe taking over counseling for the guy.

At least the ending throws that random plot out of the window though.

Speaking of Tess, her and Ben's re-appearance was great. I wish we spent more time with them. The writing was so-so in this one. I just felt everything that worked well in the first book, just didn't work well here. I think us going back and forth between Ed, Grace, Tess, Ben, the serial rapist, the potential and actual victims in the book made it feel crowded. As I said in my first review, this was a great look into what makes Robert's "In Death" books work so well now. She definitely got some practice in. This one sadly was just not a home-run.

There's a side-plot about the real Kathleen that gets dealt with too quickly. I wish that Roberts had dealt more on the fact that the sister that Grace thought she knew, wasn't who she thought she was. The setting of DC unlike with the previous book is just confined to Ed and Grace's homes. I do not ever want to read again about someone renovating their house. It's boring. At one point I was all why are we spending time on them talking about dry-wall? And then I realized I didn't care and wanted to finish the book.

The ending was lackluster. There is no real oomph to the reveal like in book 1 since readers are informed of who the bad guy is in this one earlier on. This has nothing to do with the review, but I was so surprised when I went to check this out via Overdrive and had my Kindle sending me a message saying this book is in your library.

Color me shocked. I apparently bought this back in and I have no memory of reading it. So take that little factoid as you will if you feel like taking a spin at this series. View all 5 comments. Sep 05, Anita rated it really liked it Shelves: kindle-la-city. I see shades, I see shadows, not quite there, but hints of what an awesome suspense writer Nora Roberts could have been. Years before Karen Rose even picked up a pen or keyboard Nora Roberts wrote a tale that was riveting and compelling. Nora chose another path, but the seeds of really great suspense are here.

Not the perfect pabulum characters of her latest and greatest not best seller, but flawed people who feel and react not at all perfectly. Oh, Nora where did you go so wrong? Grace is a I see shades, I see shadows, not quite there, but hints of what an awesome suspense writer Nora Roberts could have been. Grace is a best selling mystery author who has come to visit her sister in Washington DC to decompress from the book tour for her latest bestseller.

Grace is a mess, but a very successful one. Kathleen was the perfect sister, but her life is not the stuff of fairy tales. She is divorced, barely surviving financially as a high school teacher and provides phone sex on the side to earn extra money. The two sisters have had conflict their whole lives and Kathleen resents Grace's success. When Kathleen is murdered, Grace is left with anger, resentment and guilt, and the burning need to find her killer.

Ed is Kathleen's next door neighbor. He is a big, giant of a man and a DC cop. He also fell instantly in love with Grace the first moment he saw her. He is determined that he and his partner, Ben will find the killer, but as more bodies turn up and the only link is the phone sex operation, Fantasy, Incorporated, Ed knows that time is running out, and that Grace is just nuts enough to take matters into her own hands. Whereas I didn't remember much from Sacred Sins, this one I remembered a lot of the story from before.

I really liked this book the first time around and the story was memorable. I found it a quick and easy re-read and still enjoyed it the second time around. Ed Ben's homicide partner from Sacred Sins, book 1 meets Grace when she comes to visit her sister and Ed is the next doo 3. Ed Ben's homicide partner from Sacred Sins, book 1 meets Grace when she comes to visit her sister and Ed is the next door neighbor. They are instantly interested in each other and are on a date when Grace's sister is raped and murdered. Ed and Ben are the detectives on her murder case.

The case revolves around women who are doing "phone sex calls" with supposed confidentiality.

New Releases

I will say that technology is something that can quickly date a book and you can definitely tell this was written a few years back. From a character perspective, Ed is a beta hero which I actually really like. He's smart and has backbone but he doesn't throw his brawn around and thump his chest. If you can't tell I am so over the alpha caveman.

For the most part I liked Grace's character. She's a successful independent woman which I like. I don't however like when private citizens think they have the right to be part of the investigation which Grace does too much of. Yes, you want information. However, if you're intelligent you know the difference between what you can be told and what is still for the police only.

I never really liked how she pushed herself into the case.

Brazen Virtue

And a weird personal note: I really got tired of all the times one of the characters had to light up a cigarette. It almost became a plot distraction. View all 3 comments. I can't give this book less than five stars! It is the second of two books featuring two DC detectives who are partners as well as best friends, and the women who love them.

This is Ed and Grace's book but Ben and Tess from the first book are in this one as well. Readers will and do love Ed Jackson, a bear of a man with red hair and a full beard, but a heart of gold. I loved the rapport between Ben and Ed and the dialog is funny and sarcastic between these two.

A Victim of the Times Writing murder mysteries has given author Grace McCabe a successful career, but when her sister is brutally slayed while Grace is visiting her in D. Struggling to come to terms with the woman her sister really was and who she is in the wake of her loss, a deep-seeded desire for justice starts to burn in her, even as a different sort of desire is sparked for her sister's neighbor, D.

From the moment Ed A Victim of the Times Writing murder mysteries has given author Grace McCabe a successful career, but when her sister is brutally slayed while Grace is visiting her in D. From the moment Ed saw Grace leaning out the window of his neighbor's house, he was captivated by her. Realizing she was an author whose books he favored only made him want to meet her more. We must regain control of our education system, by removing the unions from our system, thus going back to the idea of rewarding educators who perform with merit raises and removal of the non-performers or indoctrinators wishing to promote socialist values and hate to conservative principles.

We need to balance our future by clinging to the middle of the road philosophies, hinged on those who came to build this nation November 21, This was to be a nation conceived in natural law granted unto us by Almighty God and not the whims of man. The ACLU is a group that claims to protect Civil Rights but the rights they want to protect is very selective as they step all over the first Amendment. The cross was erected by the American Legion and on public property, the government did not pay for the cross. A group of non-Christian citizens and the American Humanist Association, claimed it was offensive and it violated their rights.

This is a blatant violation of the text in the first amendment.

Removal of crosses honoring the war dead are constantly being removed all over America. The cross nor any other religious symbol violate the first amendment. The overzealous courts legislating from the bench is unlawful and it needs to be stopped. We are permitting a secular few to destroy our heritage and rewrite our history by removing historic statues and passing laws and ordinances that forbid flying the Confederate and the American flag.

We have people in professional sports that are kneeling as our National Anthem is played, thus disrespecting our nation. We need to change the direction of our nation back to a God-fearing respectful nation. Our politicians take an oath to serve our nation and in this oath the pledge to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic. The answer is we are no longer being led by responsible representatives we are led by a shadow government leading us into darkness.

Where are the righteous patriot leaders? We as a nation must remove the misguided individuals that have been caught up in the pomposity, derelictions of duties, and indoctrinated by the socialist movement in America. I no longer need to run as a Presidential Candidate for the Socialist Party.

The Democratic Party has adopted our platform. Ending with this We are a confused twisted convoluted nation living on the edge of total darkness, seeking to find the great beacon of light returning us to a righteous nation. We need to elect officials that humble themselves with righteousness. He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves. We should be looking for these types of individuals who wish to harm our nation as they are described in Isaiah — They are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough.

They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way, they seek their own gain. Let us drink our fill of beer! And tomorrow will be like today, or even far better. Their destructiveness must be stopped, or America will continue to fall pray to the whims of evilness, thus living in total darkness, never understanding how we got there! We should root them out of leadership positions and use what is in Leviticus to punish and not reward them of their dastardly efforts to destroy our Republic.

They must make restitution in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering. And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering, a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.

We must exalt this nation by returning to the founding principles and philosophies if we are to return America to greatness! A nation facing the dilemma of evil partaking of freedom. We stand at the crossroads of right and wrong. We face numerous challenges of moral injustice perpetrated on Christians, Jews, Caucasians, and the male gender.

This not withstanding that all women present themselves as evil wishing to diminish or discriminate against the male population. This movement centered around the illustrious Hillary Rodham Clinton. These women come from various professions, and a fueled by Hillary Clinton, and the Hollywood elites. Her slandering comments declaring white supremacy, Nazism, and took direct aim at the white male population.

She was declaring war on the newly elected President Donald Trump, the Republican Party, and all white males in America. The socialist Michael Moore announced that Judd was speaking at this march. Michael More is a disgrace to America, his weak and lame points of view about injustice in America is less than half truthful and yet the Democratic Party swarms over the Hollywood Elites.

Every day, the God-Fearing citizens of this nation face the moral dilemma of controlling their frustration and anger over the great secular divide perpetuated on our Nation. All these women have one thing in common they are elected officials in congress and they all are Democrats. There are several women in Hollywood and throughout the United States that hate men. The men are now out numbered as the last census stated the total United States population shows that This is an outstanding achievement for the female gender.

We as a free nation are proud of this unparalleled achievement unlike any other nation in the world. I speak openly and freely, as a man, women are the balance necessary to stabilize a society and I believe they have earned every ounce of respect that they receive.

Over many generations, we as a nation have proven to strive for equality between genders. We still must work diligently to maintain and improve our relationships with one another. As a man we want to honor our special woman, thus protecting and honoring her at all cost, as we tend to want to put them on a pedestal to show how much we respect and love them. Pausing for a moment to look at the bible. I will make a helper for him. Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

So, the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. We are to be reminded, as a man, they are not only our wife, they are our partner, and they are our equal. We must love, cherish and honor them as the mother of children and mate. Men have been removed from the household for many reasons.

Women have left their husbands because they chose another man. Then there is the alternative life styles movement destroying the heterosexual life that sometimes splits the family apart. There are many reasons why homes are missing a father or mother. However, the responsibility of the relationship must be maintained in a civilized manor if children are involved. The losers when a divorce occurs is the children. The economic hardship when your partner leaves can be devastating.

Church History: Complete Documentary AD 33 to Present

The woman is generally left holding the bag, thus in many cases playing both roles and struggling to earn enough money to sustain the house and have time to love their children. We are now witnessing evil in all four corners of our lives, and we as a righteous nation must root out evil. We are living the scriptures as stated:. I truly believe that God has granted unto America a reprieve, when Donald J.

Trump was elected President. For He GOD has left us an open door! We must return our nation to greatness through His word not mind. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

Our faith and trust in God Almighty as our creator, will bring ever lasting peace among us. We must stop the secular division of race, creed, color, and gender, if we want to make America Great Again! America must never give up, we must never give into a defeatist attitude showing agony of defeat.

As the power is in the hands of We the People that show the power of faith to carry this nation forward.
